note: this, and probably the next few posts are directed to adrianne, to make up for the lost week.
well, as you know i am now an employee of the university of california, berkeley. i applied for the job on saturday, received an e-mail from my boss-to-be on tuesday, did an “interview” on tuesday, and was hired on, yes, tuesday. among the release forms i had to sign was a peculiar little document entitled “UC BERKELEY PATENT POLICY.” What this form stated, and what I agreed to was that if i ever invent anything whilst working, it (my invention) then becomes the property of stated employer (in my case, UC Berkeley). Needless to say, i found this form somewhat comical, considering i am working in the language lab, checking out tapes that contain foreign language listening exercises. what in god’s name could i invent while doing my job? i realized that EVERYONE who works for berkeley has to sign one of the forms, so even the guy who puts new urinal cakes in the urinals will have to surrender his humanity altering invention. every bus driver, bus boy, and bus girl have to sign this form. bureaucracy is wonderful.
my first day of work was today (after being informed yesterday that my schedule would be e-mailed to me sometime later this week). the day was wonderful, everyone i met was pleasant and eager to help, they were also a bit intrigued that a boy was working there…you see, mostly girls work down in the basement of dwinelle hall, where the language lab quietly lurks.
my boss is a magnificent woman. and the job…well the job is…lets just say this job will never cause anyone’s blood pressure to rise…(or so i think). the job does not pay as much as others, but the fact that it is on campus, has extremely flexible hours, and allows study time makes it worth it and hopefully i can stick it through.
after work today i was pleasantly surprised to see that my sociology discussion was cancelled, so i just sat around and shot the breeze with some homies. word.
the monk has not sunk.
