education in hawaii: all keikis left behind

February 27th, 2005 · No Comments

I just got off the phone with my dad, dude is striggity stressed. Thanks to No Child Left Behind, the school he teaches at could very well be taken over for ‘restructuring’ by a private corporation, possibly resulting in the laying off of the entire administration.

The decision will be released on tuesday (also my dad’s b-day).

With all this drama, my interest in education in Hawaii is peaking. So many weird things at work: native hawaiian issues (reparations), rampant classism (the importance of private schools), christian missionary legacies (the private schools again), military brats making a ruckus, ESL things, immigration, plantation economy, tourism, and my fave, the crystal meth epidemic.

Possible honors thesis?

So it just got somadreal when father was like, “i might retire cause of this stuff. 28.5 years here, and these people just gonna come in and change it up?” The restructuring would most like cut what is left of any art/music/PE. For serious, if they cut PE, mad kids will drop out with the quickness and i aint lyin. My cousin is one of em. 8th grade at the same school and thats the only class he cares about; not ideal, but it keeps him in school.

man, hawaii is getting its ass kicked by bush f’real.

by the way, i saw my suitcase on TV. Step-dad worked on a saab commercial that has a grip of the same suitcases with red ribbon. They just gave em to the crew and now i own one. That was kinda trippy.

I so need to be a superproducer.
